Meeting: Queer historical narratives

After Block 3. Barbara Hammer retrospective: NITRATE KISSES and SANCTUS

Partners: Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; Lambda Warszawa; QueerMuzeum

In her work, Barbara Hammer (re)constructed a rubbed-out history of non-heteronormative people, particularly lesbians, in the 20th century. She created historical and contemporary images of queer communities and repression shaped by homophobia. She gave value to representations of people who were often left out of the centre of the LGBTQ+ community, challenging existing stereotypes. Dr Krystyna Mazur, who researched Barbara Hammer's work for many years, will talk about the artist’s archive and methods. Guest speakers Dr Anna Dżabagina and Dr Joanna Ostrowska, members of the Programme Council of QueerMuseum, established by Lambda Warszawa on the eve of the institution's opening, will also talk about interview techniques concerning the history of non-heteronormative people, especially women, and strategies for building inclusive representations.
